🖤🩶🤍🙃 Heresy can be an over emphasis of one 'truth' over the Whole Truth:

Thank you Jamie. I am leading a group through the book of Revelation using the works of David Chilton to support a partial Preterist position. The group is a mix of Roman Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical backgrounds and so this position is under constant scrutiny. Most of the evangelicals have come to believe that Dispensationalism is the only teaching of eschatology that ever was and so they offer the most skepticism. My eastern Orthodox friends, of course, offer the most support for a healthy view toward 70AD and all that Jesus accomplished then and what remains to be done at His 2nd Coming! I really appreciate your essay! Thank you! I will be sharing it with the group. Blessings, Ken Gryger

Hi Ken, thanks for sharing and for commenting. I hope the study goes well! Chilton is a fascinating figure. Interestingly enough for this discussion, I have heard—from friends of his—that he both desired to convert to Orthodoxy in his final days AND had embraced full preterism. I can't confirm the details of that, but it is interesting that he felt a pull to two fairly mutually exclusive positions. However, his work on Revelation remains rich and unmatched by other modern commentators!

I had heard that he was full preterist from somewhere. I can't get there from Days of Vengeance or Paradise Restored, the two texts I am using. I appreciate the endorsement of his commentary, a clear demonstration of Biblical Theology.

Yeah, I don't believe it ever made it into print, it was just something that happened in his final days. One of his friends told me he had essentially died and was revived, and then went on to live for some time, and that it was in those days that the shifts started happening. One of the things Chilton gets really right is seeing the Liturgical nature of the Book of Revelation.

FYI - I am a former Reformed and Presbyterian Christian. I ran in theonomic/Christian Reconstruction/postmillennial circles 20+ years ago, and know many of the big fish in that small pond.

Thank you!

Indeed the infinite mind of God and all His creation are very difficult to understand by mere mortals and our own little self-centered ego driven minds.

The teachings of Jesus, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and our personal Theosis Journey needs only our prayers and our paying attention to the Holy Spirit who is trying to help us to love one another TODAY and to always be kind to ourselves - give up our addictions to consumerism and our own careers in this temporal world, and to accept the painful truths from our perceived enemies.

Forgiveness for one’s “enemies” can only come from understanding THEIR stories and why they have acted in their ways. Peace in this world will not come until the majority of people’s understand the truths taught in the Orthodox Scriptures and traditions.
